Joy Proposal Story: Amanda & Casey

by Cali Pitchel

Amanda and Casey met while attending college at Texas A&M University. They had known each other through a circle of friends for a few years but it wasn’t until the summer of 2006 until they started dating. After 10 1/2 years together (and no ring), Amanda literally thought Casey was joking when he got down on one knee. Turns out, he wasn’t. Read about their proposal story, the perks of a destination wedding, and how Amanda stays sane during wedding planning.

Give us the details! When? Where? How?

We were visiting friends in Seattle, WA. On the only clear day of the trip, we decided to go see Snoqualmie Falls, a local landmark attraction. The whole group was in on the plan. There was a premeditated code phrase about taking a picture of us in front of the falls, to set the stage for the proposal. I beat them all to the punch, without knowing the plan (seriously, no idea, I just wanted a picture). After the picture was taken, I turned to take my own pictures of the falls. I was geeking out about seeing the falls that were featured in the Twin Peaks series, when I felt a hand on my hip. I turned around to see Casey down on one knee. I told him to “Stop it”, thinking it was a joke, but then saw the box in his hand. We laughed, he asked, I said yes. It was perfect.

What has been your favorite experience planning the wedding?

We are doing a destination wedding in Mexico. The planning process has been super easy, but my favorite part was definitely figuring out which resort we were going to hold the ceremony. It got us excited about the wedding knowing that it would also be a vacation for us and our guests.

How do you stay sane under the pressures of wedding planning?

The process of planning a destination wedding has been pretty straight-forward, but it can still get a little overwhelming at times. We have a travel agent that specializes in destination weddings that has been amazing at coordinating the travel and helping facilitate the planning with the resort. We are also having a stateside reception for our friends and family who cannot make the trip and had a lot of trouble finding a venue that would allow us to have a simple party without charging us for another full reception. We were able to coordinate the party that we wanted by going through a local concert venue instead of a wedding venue. Taking a step back and thinking about my options really helped keep me from pulling my hair out over a small party.

What is your favorite part of using Joy for your wedding?

When looking for a website provider for our wedding website, I did a web search and literally made a website on all of the provider sites to see what I liked and didn’t like. I probably have about 10 wedding websites out there on the web, but I liked the design options and the amount of personalization that Joy provided and when I had an issue, a real member of their customer support team would respond via chat very quickly.

What piece of advice would you give couples to ensure that they use Joy to its fullest potential?

Definitely play with all of the features and design options to make sure that you capture the beauty of your relationship and all necessary information for your wedding guests. I probably spent a month customizing the site before releasing it to just my wedding party and I still go in periodically and see if there are any new features. Be sure to utilize all of the options to get the most out of your site.

At Joy we believe that even though a wedding lasts a day, joy lasts forever. What does that mean to you?

While the wedding day is full of joy, it is only the beginning of a lifetime of joy that you get to share with your partner. I’ve been told that the day flies by, but that is okay, because while it is a celebration of the love that you will enjoy for years to come, the real joy comes from the experiences shared with each other.
