Joy Proposal Story: Andrea & Kyle

by Cali Pitchel

How did the two of you meet?

A mutual friend introduced the two of us when we were in college at the University of Michigan. The first time we met, Kyle was running around a musty basement apartment donning a Michigan football helmet. Needless to say, I was intrigued. We went on our first date in January of 2010 where the nerves nearly got the best of us. I must have answered how many siblings I have four times before he realized what was going on (for the record, I have three). But I’ll be darned if he wasn’t the sincerest guy I’d ever met.

How long have you been together?

As of right now, 7 years! It’ll be 5 years of dating plus a 3 year engagement on our big day.

Give us the proposal details! When? Where? How?

At the crack of dawn (my least favorite time of day, of course) on the morning after Christmas at my parents’ house, Kyle woke me out of my slumber to ask if I wanted “a late Christmas present.” While he was rolling over, I gracefully responded with “What is it? A fart?” whilst trying to push him away. Turns out, for the first time ever, it wasn’t a fart. He had stashed the ring in the bedside table. He rolled back over, opened the box, and didn’t even pop the question.

The wedding is simply the beginning to a life filled with love and joy. We can’t wait to spend the rest of our lives together!

I of course said ‘Are you sure?’ and immediately started sweating, then ran downstairs to tell my mom the good news!

Fun Fact: The ring was Kyle’s maternal great grandmother’s who was married in June of 1917!

What has been your favorite experience planning the wedding?

I’m a huge nerd, so I’ve loved creating a system of spreadsheets to keep everything organized!

How do you stay sane under the pressures of wedding planning?

We’ve taken the long and leisurely engagement route (over three years), so honestly it hasn’t been all that stressful yet. Plus, all we’re really aiming for is a great day surrounded by everyone we love. As long as we accomplish that, we’ll consider the day a success!

How did you hear about Joy?

A good old fashioned Google search. I perused a bunch of different free wedding websites, but fell in love with the design of Joy. Plus, I love the URL!

What is your favorite part of using Joy for your wedding?

I absolutely love how customizable it is.

What piece of advice would you give couples to ensure that they use Joy to its fullest potential?

Don’t try and do it all at once! Put down some initial thoughts and come back later to round out your answers, and don’t feel like you have to answer every single question that comes out of the box. You can always make updates later!

At Joy we believe that even though a wedding lasts a day, joy lasts forever. What does that mean to you?

The wedding is simply the beginning to a life filled with love and joy. We can’t wait to spend the rest of our lives together!
