Joy Proposal Story: Annie & Danny

by Cali Pitchel

Annie and Danny met through a mutual friend when Danny moved to Denver in 2013. Annie lived in Denver with her family and Danny moved there to work as an optometrist. Annie’s friend told her, “Introduce him to some friends, especially some girls. He doesn’t know anyone.” At first, I introduced Danny to some of my girlfriends, but then eventually remembered, “Hey, I’m a girl! I should date him.” Annie asked Danny to go to a Denver Nuggets game—and the rest is history!

Give us the details! When? Where? How?

On Christmas Day in 2014, my family planned to eat lunch at a restaurant and then open gifts at my cousin’s. That morning, Danny helped load all 50+ presents in my car. I joked to my dad, “Best boyfriend ever!” (Unbeknownst to me that Danny had already asked my dad about the proposal). After lunch, Danny starts panicking—he locked the keys in the car with all the gifts inside!

I run over and see that he was banging on the wrong car, same model and color! We go to my car and luckily it was unlocked. He didn’t want me to see the ring, so he had left his jacket in the car. He must have been so nervous he forgot which car was mine!

Our commitment to each other is that we always put the joy and happiness of the other before our own. If we are always thinking about ways to bring joy into our partner’s life, we will always have joy ourselves. It is an amazing cycle of joyous love.

Weeks before, he had asked my cousins to be involved in the proposal. Lee prepared signs that said “Merry Xmas” for each family member to hold in our annual family photo. They asked me to sit in front with Danny, so I couldn’t see them change the signs to then say “Marry Me?” After we took the photos, my sister said, “Annie, check and make sure the photos look good!”

I go up to the camera and my first reaction is that Lee spelled “merry” wrong. I didn’t notice the “me?” until Danny got down on one knee. I was in shock and the tears started. He asked, “Will you?” Of course, I said yes. The best part was that he even included my 90-year-old grandma!

What has been your favorite experience planning the wedding?

Our favorite part of wedding planning has been practicing our first dance. We are working on a montage of our Disney favorites. Neither of us can dance, but that’s what “Dancing With The Stars” videos are for. There is a lot of laughing as we try swing moves and contemporary lifts. We are seriously considering investing in dance classes, but feel that even the best dance instructor wouldn’t be able to help us.

How do you stay sane under the pressures of wedding planning?

Our wedding is on July 1, 2017, so coming up in six months! We’ve tried our best to split up tasks and check off a few items on the list every week. We have a color-coded spreadsheet so we are both involved and keep each other informed on the tasks we’re working on. We make a great team! Danny is certainly more involved than (I hear) other grooms are, so I’m grateful for that!
