Joy Proposal Story: Becky & Luke

by Cali Pitchel

Becky and Luke met almost four years ago at a house party. They were both single and feeling confident, so they got talking and spent the rest of the night sharing jokes and feeling smitten. Luke was living in Northern Queensland and Becky was living on the Central Coast of New South Wales (13 hour commute), but they were both pretty loved up and committed to doing a long distance relationship.

Give us the details! When? Where? How?

Becky had booked a surprise trip to Fiji for Luke’s birthday. We were there for almost a week, doing as many holiday based things as we could possibly fit in. We went out for dinner one night and then went back to our resort. Luke suggested we go for a night swim, which made Becky feel so excited because Luke isn’t much of a water baby! We we walked along the beach on our way to the pools, we stopped and (as corny as it sounds) we were looking at the stars.

Even though we anticipate that our wedding day will be one of the happiest days of our lives, we also know that we will continue to make each other happy for the rest of our lives!

One of our favourite movies is Monty Python, which we were quoting and Luke asked if we wanted to sing some songs from the movie. We were both laughing and then Becky turned around and Luke was down on one knee and he said, “Well, how would you like to spend the rest of your life with me? Will you marry me?”

And Luke had one of the most beauiful Heidi Gibson rings you’ve ever seen!

Becky did not keep her cool and bent down on her knees, crying and saying “Oh my God. Are you sure? Yes. Are you sure? Oh My God.”

Needless to say, after many emotional phone calls we shared a bottle of champagne!

What has been your favorite experience planning the wedding?

It’s actually so fun to be engaged! We’ve really loved calling each other fiancyeezy! Becky has loved showing off her ring to anyone who’ll ask. It’s been so fun thinking about what our guests will enjoy the most. Planning things like the music, food and drinks has been a great aspect. We’ve decided to travel back to Fiji for our wedding, so knowing our guests will get a holiday is also lovely, especially because they’re always messaging and saying how excited they are!

How do you stay sane under the pressures of wedding planning?

Becky deligates to Luke. He does a great job with actually organising things, whereas Becky is more of a dreamer! So we stay sane by having conversations about how much fun we will have – it’s actually very easy to do when you remember that you’re putting on a mad big party for your friends!

What is your favorite part of using Joy for your wedding?

We love that you can simply text your guests from the app! It takes away that whole stress of postal addresses and even email addresses. It’s so aesthetically pleasing to look at and super easy to use.

What piece of advice would you give couples to ensure that they use Joy to its fullest potential?

Definitely get everyone to make the most of the Moments! You can get your guests to upload a selfie of them when they get their invite! Plus – on the day it will mean that people are able to easily upload photos to one place.

At Joy we believe that even though a wedding lasts a day, joy lasts forever. What does that mean to you?

It means a few things to us really. Firstly, even though we anticipate that our wedding day will be one of the happiest days of our lives, we also know that we will continue to make each other happy for the rest of our lives! And secondly, we love that our guests will be able to upload so many memories to the Joy app—meaning that Joy really will last forever!
