Joy Proposal Story: Devon & John

by Cali Pitchel

Devon and John were both out with friends when Devon spotted John across the dance floor. She moseyed over, and they ended up hanging out all night. Four years later, and they recently celebrated their fourth anniversary—now they’re looking forward to a new, special date: their wedding.

Give us the proposal details! When? Where? How?

I had a rough day at work and John surprised me with a lovely note he wrote. I looked for a proposal on the letter, but when I found nothing I assumed he was just being sweet. He suggested we go out for drinks at our favorite dive bar to celebrate our upcoming trip to Hawaii. I suggested a totally different bar with fancy cocktails so he had to detour a little bit.

Marriage isn’t easy and we know that. There will be moments of frustration, but I love knowing I have a partner and teammate for the rest of my life.

When we arrived back home I decided to show off the new dress I purchased (cocktails…what can I say?) and when he saw me he said, “Wow, you look beautiful. That looks like a dress I could propose to you in.” I laughed and said, “Just tell me the day and time and I’ll wear it then!” He grew more serious and said, “It looks like a dress I could propose to you in, tonight.” He dropped down to one knee and held out the ring box.

I love that nothing was planned. He just went with the flow and made the proposal work for us. I can only imagine how nervous he was while I was chattering on about my dress!

What has been your favorite experience planning the wedding?

I think scanning items for our registry was probably the most fun experience, but my favorite part is working with John and choosing vendors that work for our vision.

How do you stay sane under the pressures of wedding planning?

First, we have a longish engagement so we aren’t stressed for time. Second, I started following the wedding planning subreddit on Reddit.com and the brides and grooms on that forum are so friendly, helpful, and full of ideas. It’s less about the fancy, high class weddings, and more about DIY, budget friendly ideas…and the drama. So much exciting drama to read about.

What is your favorite part of using Joy for your wedding?

I love the design aspect of Joy. It’s sleek and modern and very easy to use. The app is very cool and it looks professional. The free part doesn’t hurt either!

What piece of advice would you give couples to ensure that they use Joy to its fullest potential?

Play around in the beginning. You might not be able to answer every question or travel section yet, but start with the basics. You can always update and add to your site. I still have more to discover like managing the guest list!

At Joy we believe that even though a wedding lasts a day, joy should last forever. What does that mean to you?

A wedding is a party; a marriage is a lifetime. I think finding joy in the small everyday moments creates a lifetime of bliss. Marriage isn’t easy and we know that. There will be moments of frustration, but I love knowing I have a partner and teammate for the rest of my life.
