Gretchen was sick and throwing up from too much New Year’s Eve champagne and Ren was taking care of her. Ren’s original plans to propose in Maggie Daley Park in Chicago were ruined when Gretchen got sick, so he felt like 4:30 AM on the bathroom floor was as good a time as any! Not picturesque or glamorous, but we’ll never forget it!

What has been your favorite experience planning the wedding?
Reflecting on our relationship! The other night we were talking about how we first started dating and what was going through our heads when we first started crushing on each other. It’s fun to think about the beginning of the relationship as you prepare for the rest of your lives together.
How do you stay sane under the pressures of wedding planning?
Laughter and a good sense of humor.

What is your favorite part of using Joy for your wedding?
I love all of the options! There are so many great ways to make the website totally your own! I love the overall design of Joy. I would say getting on Joy and answering the questions of our love story together was one of my favorite parts of our wedding planning so far!
What piece of advice would you give couples to ensure that they use Joy to its fullest potential?
Take some time to scan through every option, every setting, every style. There are so many great resources for the couple and the wedding guests so explore the site and fill in everything. In a way, I’ve used Joy as a wedding planning helper! I get to track our decision making progress each time I add a new detail to our schedule, wedding party, or registry.

At Joy we believe that even though a wedding lasts a day, joy lasts forever. What does that mean to you?
A huge part of our love story was a prayer for joy. Gretchen prayed for joy right before she started dating Ren, and she believes that he was an answer to that prayer. Joy has been the greatest blessing, and Ren and I are constantly reminded of that throughout our relationship. Weddings bring out the best and worst in people, and sometimes it’s not joyful. But the wedding is ultimately about the marriage of Ren and me, and our end goal is the joy we will get from starting our life together. We can look back on dating, our engagement, and our wedding with joy, but the greatest gift is the joy that we have found in each other and will have forever.
