Joy Proposal Story: Heather & Stephen

by Allie Grampa

Heather and Stephen met through a mutual friend, but they later learned that we were in many of the same places at the same time and had many mutual friends before officially meeting. They had no idea—and it was clearly meant to be.

Give us the details! When? Where? How?

We took our first trip out of the U.S. together and decided to go Puerto Vallarta for a long weekend. As soon as we got to our Airbnb we went straight to the roof to swim in the infinity pool and just take in the view.

Stephen began to walk around the roof and I couldn’t figure out what he was doing. I later learned he was trying to figure out how to ask me and was extremely nervous. While I was swimming Stephen began to walk toward our chairs and as he did he doubled over and let out a loud cry. I had no idea what was going on and didn’t know what happened. I swam over immediately to check on him because he had fallen to his knees. I am at the edge of pool, still in the water, and he seems to be hurt. In my head I was thinking “he better not be sick, we just got here!

He looked up at me and grabbed my hand, looked at me and then let out another loud cry and put his head down. He let me know later that when he looked up he completely forgot what he was going to say because he was so nervous and his only reaction was to act like he was hurt again. He looked up one last time and then finally asked me the question, “Will you marry me?” He said a few other things but I was in shock that I forgot most of it! Of course I had said yes and then he reach back and pulled out a ring box. As he began to open the ring box I started to laugh a little and his eyes got wide and he asked with worried look on his face, “What’s wrong? What is it? You don’t like it?!” I replied, “Babe, the ring is upside down!” We both couldn’t stop laughing.

What has been your favorite experience planning the wedding?

Finding the perfect location. I am a teacher so getting married in “The Old School House” on a hazelnut farm in Oregon Wine Country is just too perfect!

How do you stay sane under the pressures of wedding planning?

Get organized first and then take it one step at a time. Stephen also treats me to dinner at least once a week and I can escape the planning for a bit.
