Joy Proposal Story: Lauren & Andres

by Cali Pitchel

Give us the proposal details! When? Where? How?

We designed the ring together with diamonds from our grandparents’ engagement rings. Once the ring was made, Andres kept the proposal plans a secret. One Friday after work, he mentioned we had to meet his friends to watch a soccer game. Admittedly, I complained about having to attend the boy’s night and got ready reluctantly. It seemed very strange when Andres drove downtown (Miami) and parked in front of a fancy steakhouse. He admitted that the plan was all part of a surprise date night and we had a fabulous dinner ready. I was not expecting the proposal until the server anxiously brought over the dessert plate with “Marry me?” in chocolate.

If all we had was each other — that would be enough.

Andres got down on one knee and gave me the ring we had dreamt up months earlier. The staff at the restaurant celebrated with us and brought champagne. It was the classic and private proposal that I always hoped for. Props to my parents for knowing about the whole plan and not saying a thing!

What has been your favorite experience planning the wedding?

The wedding has brought our two families together. Andres’ family only speaks Spanish and live in Colombia and my family only speaks English and live in Florida. The involvement from the families proved how love and goodwill can be shown even with distance and language barriers.

How do you stay sane under the pressures of wedding planning?

Focus on what is important and delegate everything else! I picked invitations, the venue and the church but had family and friends arrange the other parts that I was less interested in.

At Joy we believe that even though a wedding lasts a day, joy lasts forever. What does that mean to you?

To us, that means if all we had was each other — that would be enough. The parties and successes and material things are all just cherries on top.
