Joy Proposal Story: Oren & Mark

by Kelsey Vickers

How did the two of you meet?

We met at a Halloween Party and later bumped into each other, out of costume, and started chatting because we hardly recognized each other. Afterwards we went on a date to Applebee’s.

How long have you been together?

It will be 11 years this November!

I received a job offer across the state in a different city right out of school and during the height of the recession. I knew the job offer was for a great place and I decided to accept it. When my partner found out about the offer he knew it meant we would have to live apart since he couldn’t move because his family needed him, due to a recent traumatic event they had endured.

One night before I was set to move to Nashville, my partner, with tears in his eyes told me that we would drift apart and I would leave him once I got settled into this new life in a new city. I promptly told my partner that he was wrong and that I was going to marry him some day and that if he didn’t believe me, I would marry him before I move just to prove my love for him. We decided not to get married, but rather remain engaged.

I lived four years in Nashville working at a wonderful job, but miserable that my partner still was unable to come and live with me. I eventually decided to move back to where we first met and now that we are officially together again the next step was to begin planning the day we started talking about six years ago!

What has been your favorite experience planning the wedding?

Telling all of my loved ones and hearing their reactions. Finding all of the family members on both our sides that are just as excited for our wedding day as we are.

How do you stay sane under the pressures of wedding planning?

Alcohol, Friends, and our pet cat and dog!

What is your favorite part of using Joy for your wedding?

I like knowing that everything that my guests will need is in one central location they can reference whenever they need it.

What piece of advice would you give couples to ensure that they use Joy to its fullest potential?

Don’t be afraid to read the help or how to sections. I found a quick way to adjust the settings on my webpage for the security and all it took was a minute.

At Joy we believe that even though a wedding lasts a day, joy lasts forever. What does that mean to you?

Mark and I have been together for 11 years. We have traveled thousands of miles, made hundreds of friends, and experienced hundreds of amazing events and milestones together. I have built a life with this person and I couldn’t be happier. All of the people Mark and I are inviting to the wedding are a representation of our two lives that we have already lived, both together and before we met. For that one day, and one day only, all of those guests from all different backgrounds are going to be present to witness Mark and I formalizing what has already existed between us. Love.
