Joy Proposal Story: Renee & David

by Allie Grampa

Renee and David met in high school. Dave graduated a year before Renee, but they are both quite nerdy, so they bonded through classes like physics and calculus. They’ve known each other for 10 years, and their friendship blossomed into a romance.

Give us the details! When? Where? How?

Dave asked if we could play euchre with his aunt and uncle one Friday, and said that there was a waterfall nearby that we should check out. We’d explored little waterfalls before, so this wasn’t suspicious.

Dave and I arrive at the park and are walking near the waterfall, when we pass a man taking pictures of a woman in front of the base. We exchanged brief hellos and continue walking down. Little did I know that the man and woman were actually a photographer and videographer Dave had hired to capture the special moment he had planned!

I trust that the joy of our wedding day will continue through the years as we build a life together, first with each other and then, hopefully, with lots of little munchkins.

Dave and I stopped at the base, where he revealed that he was able to retrieve one of two missing puzzle pieces that his brother Dan stole.

A little backstory—Dave and I labored on a 2,000 piece puzzle over the span of about 10 months. We finally finished, except for two pieces we could not find, even after turning the room over. Dan, being the obnoxious brother that he is, stole them at some point just to mess with us.

Well, Dave said that he finally recovered one of the pieces from Dan, but that we needed to work at the second piece together. Dave then bended down on one knee, offered a speech that melted my heart, and asked me to marry him. How could I say no?

What has been your favorite experience planning the wedding?

Dave and I are still getting to the fun parts of the wedding, like choosing colors and decorations. So far, I’ve enjoyed choosing the readings for our mass and picking out a wedding dress and bridesmaids’ dresses.

How do you stay sane under the pressures of wedding planning?

Dave is definitely my calming presence. I’m the type of person who analyzes and overthinks, and he helps me to stop and enjoy the process. He also reminds me that no matter what, the wedding will be a success if at the end of the day, we are husband and wife.

At Joy we believe that even though a wedding lasts a day, joy should last forever. What does that mean to you?

Well, the wedding is meant to help bring joy for the rest of your lives, isn’t it? You marry this person because they make you a better, happier, more fulfilled version of yourself. I trust that the joy of our wedding day will continue through the years as we build a life together, first with each other and then, hopefully, with lots of little munchkins. All the while, we’ll share that life with our family and friends as we will on our wedding day.
