Joy Proposal Story: Shreya & Nimit

by Cali Pitchel

Nimit and Shreya met online in February 2013—but this isn’t your typical dating website romance. They met on tumblr, a blogging website. They realized we had many common interests, messaged each other, and before they knew it, they were talking on a daily basis. Although Shreya is originally from Connecticut, she was attending Iona College just 20 minutes from where Nimit was living! They met in person for the first time in Central Park in June 2013. It felt as if they had been friends for life. One year later they made it official at the top of the Empire State Building, and two years after that Nimit put a ring on it.

Give us the details! When? Where? How?

Nimit and I decided to take a vacation to Aruba in September 2016. Little did I know, Nimit had already asked for my parents’ blessings and been exchanging emails with a proposal planner and photographer in Aruba for months prior to the trip! On day three of our trip, Nimit had told me he had booked a ‘romantic package’ through a nearby resort. I had a lot of questions, but any excuse to dress up is fine with me. We walked onto the secluded beach and waiting for us was a personalized message in a bottle planted in the sand welcoming us. We followed wooden signs posted in the sand that said “love” and “magic” leading up to final sign which said “I love you” with a private table set up for us with sweets, flowers, and champagne.

Everything seemed so Pinterest-esque! As we were enjoying the views and each other’s company, I had told Nimit that I couldn’t be happier, in which he replied with a smile and said ‘let’s take a walk.’ We were walking along the water and decided to stop and enjoy the views of the sun setting before us when he looked at me and said ‘You said you couldn’t be happier?’ Nimit proceeded to get down on one knee, open up a box with a beautiful ring inside, and asked me to marry him! I feel like I blacked out for a moment. With tears in my eyes, I ecstatically said ‘yes!!’ I guess catching the bouquet at my sister’s wedding less than two weeks before really worked!

What has been your favorite experience planning the wedding?

It’s been great to find out that our shared interests and opinions extend to our taste in weddings since it just solidifies that we’re meant to be together.

How do you stay sane under the pressures of wedding planning?

There is a lot that goes into planning an Indian wedding, but taking everything step by step and creating google documents and excel spreadsheets has helped. We also get by with help from our family. Indian weddings are not just about the couple, they’re about the joining of two families, and we really can’t thank our parents, siblings, and relatives enough in helping us plan our big fat Indian wedding!
