Joy Proposal Story: Sydney & Darren

Joy Proposal Story: Sydney & Darren

Give us the proposal details! When? Where? How?

Darren and I are Peace Corps Volunteers in Botswana. We planned a trip to Cape Town, South Africa with my sister and brother. Little did I know that Darren had bought a Botswana diamond and colluded with my sister to plan an epic engagement. On our last full day in Cape Town, we had a fun-filled day swimming with penguins, running away from baboons at Cape Point (the Southernmost tip of Africa) and driving along the beautiful Chapman’s Peak coastline. I thought we were just making a quick stop at Chapman’s Peak Lookout to watch the sunset, at least that’s what everyone said we were doing! When we got to the lookout point, Darren said we should take a selfie. So we hiked to a nice point and pulled out the camera. There was a woman there too and she offered to take our photo for us, with her nice camera. She said she was a photography student and needed some practice and that she would email us the photo. So, I said sure! As she got ready to take the picture, Darren turned to me, wiped the hair out of my face, held my hands tight, and began his proposal. This woman was not a random student, she was a professional photographer who Darren had hired to capture our special moment! He proposed in Setswana, the language we’ve learned to speak in Botswana, and I said, “Yes!”

At Joy we believe that even though a wedding lasts a day, joy lasts forever. What does that mean to you?

Many of the details of the proposal, engagement period, and wedding will be forgotten in time. But, the feeling of joy and happiness during all of these special moments will last forever. The process is joyful if you let it be.
